The article presents a brief comparative analysis of categorical systems of protected areas in Ukraine, Ecuador and in the world. The basis of comparison is a classification of protected areas in IUCN. Pointed out in common and distinctive features of the categories defined key place of botanical gardens in the classification of protected areas in Ukraine and Ecuador. In these countries, the botanical gardens at the national level are the main categories to ensure preservation of collections phytodiversity.
